Short answer

Charge the phone away from bed, finish the alarm task in another room, and block or hide the apps for a short period. You can't scroll through a feed that isn't waiting on the first screen.

Your thumb is following a path it knows

You may not remember deciding to open the app because there was barely a decision. Alarm off, swipe, feed. The movement has been repeated enough to happen before the part of you with plans is fully awake.

Move the phone and the task. Use a barcode in the bathroom or kitchen. Remove social apps from the first screen or schedule a block. The aim is to create a few seconds in which another action can happen.

Don't replace the feed with a blank wall

Prepare music, tea, a shower, a book, or clothes. Something gentle should be easier than returning to bed. Start with a boundary you can keep, even if it is only ten minutes.

If scrolling is helping you avoid anxiety, loneliness, or a day you dread, the app arrangement is only part of the answer. Be curious about what the feed is rescuing you from.

Common questions

Should I delete social media?

You can, but you may only need a morning block, a less tempting home screen, or the phone outside the bedroom.

What if my alarm is on my phone?

Use the phone for the alarm, then make dismissal happen away from bed and keep distracting apps blocked until later.
